Albert Babb Insley, American, (1842-1937). Albert Insley was born in New Jersey and was active early in the arts. Insley studied with both Jasper Cropsey and later with George Inness. In his early twenties, Insley was already exhibiting at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Albert Insley's early works reflect the influence of the Barbizon School in France. His favorite landscape pictures captured a softness of light and quiet atmosphere, similar to this painting which was most likely painted in the Catskills. Insley traveled and painted extensively throughout the New York, New Jersey, and New England area. Albert Insley's paintings are included in the collections of Archives of American Art, Washington, D.C., The Delaware Art Museum, The Rockland Historical Society, NY, and The Jersey City Museum, NJ, to name a few.
