Samuel Rothbort

Samuel Rothbort

Samuel Rothbort, American. 1882-1971.

Samuel Rothbort was born in Walkovisk, Poland-Russia in 1882 and immigrated to America in 1904 where he
eventually settled in Brooklyn. He originally worked in oils, painting nearly every subject conceivable in his
self taught, impressionistic style. Rothbort first exhibited in New York City in 1917, with The Society of Independent
Artists. It was here that he met the noted critic Hamilton Easterfield, who would serve as a patron until his
death in 1919. Rothbort also exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum during this time.

Like many artists of his day, the Depression years were not kind to Samuel Rothbort, forcing a period of financial
hardship for him and his family. Although he continued painting, he switched to watercolors as oil paints were too
expensive. After 1940, though, Rothbort's fortunes changed. He exhibited frequently at the Charles Barzansky Gallery
on Madison Avenue, where he became known for his historic cityscapes of Brooklyn as well as his impressionistic
landscapes of Long Island. He continued working and exhibiting well into his eighties.

His works are included in the collections of the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ; the Portland Museum of Art,
Portland, ME; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, to name a few.
