Andrew Winter (1893-1958)
Andrew Winter was born in Sindi, Estonia in 1893. He spent his earlier years as a mariner, sailing as a mate on square riggers and later on British and American steamships. These experiences lead to his deep appreciation of the ocean that would come through in his paintings. After becoming an American citizen in 1921, Andrew Winter began to study painting at the National Academy of Design and continued to study in Paris and Rome on a scholarship. During his career, he exhibited extensively throughout the Northeast and won many awards for his work. He was a member of prestigious societies including the National Academy, the American Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America and the American Arts Professional League. After being a frequent visitor to Monhegan Island, he settled there permanently with his wife Mary in 1942.
