Ella Boocock Hoedt, American (1889-1940’s)
Ella Boocock Hoedt was born in Philadelphia in 1889. She was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in 1906., and also studied in Europe during this time . She married photographer William Hoedt and resided in Roxbourough, PA. for most of her career. Ella and William had one daughter.
Ella was very active in the artist community. She was a member of the Philadelphia Artists Alliance and was an executive member of the Exhibition Committee of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). She exhibited at PAFA in 1932. Hoedt painted alongside other contemporary artists of her day including Daniel Barber and Hugh Breckenridge. The influences of Breckenridge with the broken brushwork can be felt in this beautiful painting.
