Emil Brack, German 1860-1905
Emil Brack began his education as an artist at the Berlin Academy, changing to Munich to study under Wilhelm von Lindenschmit, and later, entering the Julian Academy of Paris. During his training in Berlin and Munich he became fascinated by genre scenes. Later, in Paris his genre paintings illustrated the turn of the century society including scenes of family life and depictions of children. The catalog of the Hafenstaengl publishing firm in Munich illustrates fifty of his works. Brack's work is included in the collection of the museum of Halle, Munich .
A student of the academies of Berlin, Munich and of the Julian Academy of Paris, Brack has eloquently displayed the result of his formative training in this full length portrait of a young girl. The academic tradition stressed the importance of careful drawing, the defining of contour line, and the necessity of both classical balance and finish.
Brack's charming young subject is painted in a highly realistic manner revealing his exceptional ability as a draftsman and the sophisticated color sense that is an integral part of the academic tradition. The fair haired young sitter gazes directly at the viewer, a sweet smile upon her lips, as she lovingly holds her small doll. Her large, almond shaped blue eyes and composed demeanor convey a tenderness as well as a sophistication well beyond her years.
The artist's technical acumen in unsurpassed here; she is dressed in a burgundy velvet dress with a wide satin sash, decorative lace cuffs and matching collar framing her lovely face. His attention to detail is evident in the manner in which he has painted her well worn black shoes, slightly upturned at the toe. Brack has subtly modeled the face and hands in soft umber tones which is beautifully offset by her flaxen waist length hair. The small doll is treated in an equally realistic fashion with exceptional finish. She stands with the weight on her left leg supported by a settee, covered in olive green velvet, complementing the rich burgundy of her dress. The brass accents and turned wood legs of the furniture are exceptionally rendered. The tonal background of pale grey and charcoal serves to draw the whole of our attention upon the captivating charm of the young beauty.
